AS former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak marks three years behind bars, his family continues to call for what they deem a fair and just legal process.

His eldest son, Datuk Mohamad Nizar, expressed sorrow over his father’s continued incarceration but reaffirmed the family’s determination to seek justice.

"We are deeply saddened that our father remains behind bars, but we are not giving up. As a family, we pray that the matter of house arrest will be resolved soon in court," he told Sinar Ahad.

Najib, who is serving a 12-year sentence related to the 1MDB scandal, has been the subject of ongoing political and legal debate in Malaysia. Calls for his release or a reassessment of his case have persisted, particularly among members of his party, UMNO.

UMNO Supreme Council member Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi praised Najib’s composure, noting that he has never incited protests or demonstrations in his defence.

"As a former Prime Minister, he has remained calm under pressure and has not provoked UMNO members or the public to protest on his behalf," said Mohd Puad.

He further claimed that Najib is a victim of political vengeance, suggesting his conviction was the result of what he described as "selective, rushed and poisonous prosecution".

"There are even former judges who have admitted that Najib did not receive a fair trial," he added.

Mohd Puad also criticised the handling of a previous royal consent concerning the possibility of house arrest, claiming the decision was “played with”.

"Now the public is beginning to realise that many of Najib’s past policies were successful and practical, while his political opponents have failed to deliver on their promises," he said.

He added that Najib’s return is eagerly awaited by supporters who still believe in his leadership capabilities.

"Although Najib never asked UMNO to defend him, the party stands firmly in solidarity. We hope he receives a full pardon, and that the struggle for justice will reach its resolution on 19 September," Mohd Puad said. - August 24, 2025
