THE BUDI MADANI RON95 (BUDI95) programme is expected to provide eligible citizens with fuel savings of up to RM200 per month, according to Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan.
He said the initiative, which fixes the price of RON95 petrol at RM1.99 per litre starting 30 September, demonstrates the government’s commitment to easing the cost-of-living burden in line with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s aspirations.
“The Prime Minister has been focused on tackling the cost of living through BUDI95. Lowering the price to RM1.99, as promised, is intended to help the people manage their expenses,” Mr Amir said during a media briefing on Tuesday.
He noted that the market price for RON95 petrol in recent months had ranged from RM2.60 to RM2.75 per litre.
“When people fill up at the petrol station and pay RM1.99, the government is already covering a significant subsidy. If the market price is RM2.60, the savings to consumers are nearly RM183 a month. At RM2.75, it’s up to RM228 monthly,” he said.
The subsidy is available to all Malaysian citizens with a valid driving licence, covering more than 16 million people.
The initiative, announced by the Prime Minister on Monday, applies to all Malaysians regardless of income level.
Amir added the government could save between RM2.5 billion and RM4 billion annually through the targeted nature of the scheme, depending on fluctuations in global oil prices.
“We can’t predict the exact amount the government will save because it depends on whether global oil prices remain stable or increase,” he said.
Eligibility checks for BUDI95 will open online this Thursday via the official portal at [www.budimadani.gov.my](http://www.budimadani.gov.my), through BUDI95 Customer Service Centres, or using the Setel and CaltexGO apps following successful identity verification.
No Daily Purchase Limit for RON95 Petrol
Seperately, the government has confirmed it has no plans to impose a daily purchase limit on RON95 petrol, dismissing recent media reports suggesting otherwise as inaccurate.
A statement issued by the Ministry of Finance (MoF) clarified that while the government continues to explore measures to prevent abuse of the RON95 fuel subsidy, any such step would not include limiting the number of daily purchases.
“The government has absolutely no intention of restricting the purchase of RON95 petrol to once a day,” the ministry said. “Although efforts are being considered to curb misuse of the RON95 subsidy, the BUDI95 programme was designed to ensure the daily needs of Malaysians are met. A once-a-day purchase limit would clearly be inconsistent with that purpose.”
The clarification comes as the government prepares to implement the BUDI95 scheme, which offers subsidised RON95 fuel at RM1.99 per litre for eligible Malaysians from 30 September.
