THE government has tasked Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa to lead a special task force to protect the interests of the Malay community in Kampung Baru and Kampung Sungai Baru.

Dr Zaliha told the Dewan Negara today that her responsibilities include coordinating negotiations between developers, government agencies, and local community representatives. The government is also pursuing new measures to increase Bumiputera ownership in Kampung Sungai Baru through four key initiatives.

“First, active involvement of government-linked companies such as UDA Holdings Berhad. I have also met with PNB (Permodalan Nasional Berhad) in our efforts to redevelop strategically located Malay areas.

“Second, the provision of replacement housing for Malays to preserve the socio-cultural continuity in historic areas like Kampung Baru and Kampung Sungai Baru.

“Third, diversification of development components, including condominium units, SOHO, shop offices, and affordable Malay-owned commercial and residential units to increase urban Malay ownership.

“Fourth, monitoring of Bumiputera or Malay quota compliance in these areas by DBKL through quarterly reporting mechanisms,” she said during the debate on the 2026 Supply Bill.

Dr Zaliha also highlighted confusion among several opposition Members of Parliament regarding the distinction between Kampung Baru and Kampung Sungai Baru.

“Although Kampung Sungai Baru is part of Kampung Baru, its status is different. Kampung Sungai Baru is not MAS (Malay Agricultural Settlement) land and has never been gazetted as a Malay reserve,” she explained. - October 29, 2025
