MALAYSIA’S passport has climbed to third place in the 2025 Global Passport Index, marking a remarkable leap in international mobility and signalling growing global confidence in the nation’s diplomatic and security credentials.
According to data from [www.passportindex.org](http://www.passportindex.org), the United Arab Emirates (UAE) tops the Passport Power Rank, followed by Singapore and Spain in joint second place. Malaysia shares the third position with 15 other nations, including Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Finland, Luxembourg, Italy, Denmark, Portugal, Switzerland, Greece, Austria, Norway, Ireland and South Korea.
This new ranking makes Malaysia’s passport the second strongest in Southeast Asia after Singapore, reinforcing its standing as a trusted and influential nation in international travel governance and border security.
Notably, Malaysia was ranked 12th just a month ago — a nine-place jump that highlights the government’s sustained efforts to strengthen the security of travel documents and foster robust diplomatic relations worldwide.
In a social media post, the Immigration Department of Malaysia (JIM) said the achievement reflects “international trust and recognition of Malaysia’s travel document security, which is highly regarded globally.”
The department added that Malaysian citizens now enjoy visa-free access to 174 countries worldwide, facilitating smoother travel for tourism, business and education.
Economically, Malaysia’s enhanced passport power is also expected to boost global business opportunities and foreign investment.
However, authorities reminded Malaysians that this success comes with responsibility. Citizens are urged to uphold the nation’s image abroad by respecting local laws and demonstrating professionalism and ethical conduct to maintain global trust in the Malaysian passport.
