NEARLY twenty years after the disappearance and death of eight-year-old Nurin Jazlin, the case remains deeply embedded in Malaysia’s collective memory.

The tragedy resurfaced in public conversation after her father, Jazimin Abdul Jalil, made a moving request on a popular Facebook page, Edit Apa Hari Ini.

Jazimin asked members of the group to merge his photograph with an image of his late daughter and to produce an enlarged version suitable for framing.

The simple plea resonated widely, amassing nearly 15,000 reactions and more than 2,000 comments, making it one of the platform’s most widely shared posts. Many users responded by contributing their own edited tributes as a gesture of solidarity and moral support for the grieving family.

Nurin Jazlin was reported missing on 20 August 2007, believed to have been abducted while walking to a night market in Wangsa Maju, Kuala Lumpur.

Extensive search efforts failed to locate her, and her body was eventually discovered about a month later inside a sports bag left in Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

Post-mortem examinations revealed that she had been severely abused and deprived of food and water.

Objects found in her body indicated sexual assault, details that shocked and traumatised the nation.

To this day, the perpetrator has never been identified, and the high-profile case remains unsolved. Its enduring mystery continues to provoke anguish, public debate and reflection on child safety in Malaysia. - December 7, 2025
