MALAYSIANS have begun travelling to Hatyai again over the past week, following the full recovery of areas affected by recent flooding. Hotels and markets are reopening, signalling a gradual revival of the city’s tourism sector.

Aida Oujeh, Chairperson of the Thailand and Asia Halal Trade and Tourism Association, confirmed that more than 40 hotels have resumed operations, alongside night markets that have reopened to visitors. Hotels are also offering promotional discounts to encourage Malaysian tourists to return.

"We anticipate an increase in Malaysian visitors during the school holidays. We warmly welcome their arrival to support the local economy, including eateries and restaurants," she said.

Aida added that 20 halal restaurants are currently open to cater to tourists seeking convenient dining options.

She also revealed plans to organise a halal food festival in Hatyai early next year.

"This initiative aims to attract more tourists and to show our appreciation for the continued support of Malaysians who frequently visit Hatyai. We are grateful to Malaysians for their consistent support," she said. "We will strive to provide the best services, including through hotels, to ensure everyone’s comfort."

Earlier reports stated that Hatyai was hit by flooding on 22 November, with clean-up and recovery efforts commencing from 29 November.

Dr Sitthipong Sitthiprapha, President of the Hatyai-Songkhla Hotel Association, estimated losses at around 10 billion baht due to damage to properties and tourist centres in the city.
