Madani Government maps bolder 2026 pivot with economy, reform and digital growth in focus
Bolder 2026 agenda may need a shift in public expectations from policy planning to concrete delivery on the economy, living costs and public service reform - December 18, 2025

PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s declaration that the Madani Government will “to take bolder steps in 2026” (“melangkah lebih berani pada 2026”) reflects an acknowledgement that the next phase of administration will require firmer, higher-impact decisions as public expectations move beyond planning towards measurable outcomes.

The emphasis on greater boldness points not merely to new policy announcements, but to the government’s readiness to make difficult and sometimes unpopular choices in the long-term interest of the nation and its people, even at the cost of political discomfort.

After several years in office, public scrutiny is increasingly centred on execution, particularly in tackling economic pressures, easing the cost of living and improving the effectiveness of public service delivery. In this context, 2026 is shaping up as a decisive year that will test whether ambition can be translated into tangible progress.

The shift also implies that the government must be prepared to confront public reaction, criticism and differing viewpoints as it advances reforms that were once considered sensitive or politically challenging. In a multi-ethnic and multi-religious society, the balance between decisiveness and prudence remains crucial to ensure that firm action does not come at the expense of social harmony.

For many Malaysians, courage in governance is ultimately judged by fairness, inclusivity and direct impact on daily life, rather than by policy changes that remain abstract or confined to official documents.

Economic management will be a central benchmark. The government’s ability to strengthen growth, curb inflation and expand quality employment opportunities will determine whether the promised new direction delivers meaningful benefits.

Budget 2026, which will be the fourth Madani budget and the first under the 13th Malaysia Plan, is expected to form the backbone of national development for the next five years, aligning federal priorities with state-level economic needs while addressing cost-of-living pressures.

Digitalisation and innovation are also set to feature prominently. Malaysia’s technology sector is projected to continue expanding, with greater emphasis on artificial intelligence, data centres and the establishment of Digital Transformation Units across ministries to modernise government operations and service delivery.

At the same time, the Madani agenda places strong weight on people’s well-being and social protection. The focus is on ensuring that social safety nets are inclusive and benefit all segments of society, while strengthening essential services such as education and healthcare.

Governance and integrity remain foundational pillars. Efforts to reinforce transparency, protect citizens’ rights and strengthen public sector accountability, including measures outlined under the proposed Malaysian Ombudsman framework, are seen as essential to sustaining public trust.

Sustainable development is another key strand, reflected in projects such as Kota MADANI and Bandar MADANI, which underscore the government’s commitment to environmentally responsible and inclusive urban growth.

Taken together, Anwar’s 2026 vision for the Madani Government is framed around raising the nation’s competitiveness while simultaneously strengthening the social safety net.

By focusing on the digital economy, inclusivity and governance reform, the administration aims to lay a durable foundation for the next five years under RMK13 and demonstrate that its promised boldness is firmly anchored in national interest and the well-being of the people. - December 18, 2025
