THE disappearance of 53-year-old Suri Narudin was only discovered several days after she failed to arrive in Zurich, Switzerland as scheduled, prompting her friends there to alert her family in Sarawak.
According to close friend Mac Ruhayu Mohd Nor, Suri had planned to fly from Kuala Lumpur to Doha, Qatar before continuing her journey to Switzerland.
“Her friend waiting in Doha didn’t know who to contact when Suri didn’t arrive, so the concern only arose after her friends in Switzerland were unable to trace her,” Mac Ruhayu said.
“Friends in Switzerland began to worry because she never showed up. They waited for eight hours, but Suri never arrived. That’s when they finally contacted her family in Sarawak.”
The trip to Switzerland was part of Suri’s annual routine to meet old friends, with flight tickets and travel arrangements made well in advance.
Her disappearance caused alarm because she was normally easy to reach and kept close contacts informed of her movements.
“Knowing Suri, she’s not the type to disappear without a word. When several days passed without any news, we knew something was wrong. Her friends in Zurich contacted the family because she did not show up. She had booked a three-day, two-night stay in Zurich,” Mac Ruhayu said.
Early search efforts faced challenges due to a lack of clear leads, and initial reports made by family members gave no indication of foul play.
It was only after persistent efforts, including the public dissemination of information and Mac Ruhayu posting a video on social media, that investigations were expanded.
“Through persistent efforts and cooperation from all parties, the search progressed step by step. Without this, the case might have been treated as having no criminal element. We are grateful to the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) for their swift action,” Mac Ruhayu added.
Suri resided at Apartmen Seri Nilam in Ampang and frequently travelled between Sarawak and Kuala Lumpur.
While in the capital, she stayed with her niece, who works at a shopping centre. A man assigned to assist with daily tasks, including transporting the niece to school, has been identified in the investigation, though Mac Ruhayu stressed that all further developments are left to the police.
Currently, the identity of a woman’s body discovered yesterday at an abandoned house in Kampung Batu 4, Pedas has not been definitively confirmed as Suri.
“Suri’s niece has visited Hospital Rembau for preliminary identification. I’ve been informed that DNA testing is required to confirm if the body is indeed Suri,” Mac Ruhayu said.
He added that he will also visit Hospital Rembau after the autopsy is completed to manage arrangements for bringing the body back to Sarawak, in cooperation with the Rumah Sarawak community organisation.
“If it is confirmed that the body is Suri, we will arrange for her remains to be returned to her hometown in Kuching, Sarawak. As a close friend and family, I am deeply saddened. We had hoped she would be found safe and well, but if this is her fate, we will accept it,” he said.
Earlier reports noted that police had appealed to the public for assistance in locating Suri, who was reported missing since December 8. Ampang Jaya District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Khairul Anuar Khalid, confirmed that authorities received the missing person report from her family at the Ampang Police Station.
Prior to this, a video posted by singer Mac Ruhayu seeking public help to locate Suri went viral, highlighting the urgency of tracing her whereabouts after she failed to depart for her overseas trip scheduled on December 9. - December 19, 2025
