KEDAH police have confirmed that 77 civil servants, including police personnel, have been arrested this year in an extensive campaign against drug abuse.
The crackdown, which has seen a sharp rise in both arrests and drug seizures, demonstrates the authorities’ uncompromising stance on narcotics, regardless of the offenders’ professions.
State Police Chief Datuk Adzli Abu Shah, speaking at the Kedah Contingent Police Headquarters yesterday, stated that the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) were taking a firm approach in tackling the state’s drug problem.
“I am not ashamed to state that police officers and personnel are also involved. The leadership of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has informed us that we will not compromise, and the arrests of civil servants include teachers and others,” he said.
Adzli revealed that between the start of the year and 21 December, Kedah police recorded 26,907 drug-related arrests, up from 23,759 over the same period last year — a rise of 13.2 per cent. Total arrests, including alleged drug suppliers, reached 27,657.
Of these, 24,335 were identified as drug users, reflecting an increase of 14.6 per cent from the previous year.
The chief also noted a dramatic surge in drug seizures, with various types of narcotics and ketum valued at RM47.6 million confiscated this year, compared with RM8.8 million last year, marking a near fivefold increase.
Among the substances seized, marijuana resin topped the list at 426 kilograms, followed by 419 kilograms of methamphetamine (syabu), 192 kilograms of marijuana, and 120 kilograms of heroin base.
In addition, under Section 39C of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which applies to drug users with two prior addiction records, 1,474 individuals had been arrested and charged as of yesterday.
Adzli stressed that all arrests were intelligence-driven and based on information gathered during ongoing investigations, reinforcing the police’s commitment to tackling the state’s escalating drug problem. - December 24, 2025
