THE Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) expects traffic flow to increase by 3.27 million vehicles using major highways nationwide in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebrations this time.
LLM in a statement today, announced that the increase in traffic is expected to start as early as Friday, especially for vehicle movements heading north, south and the East Coast.
The total traffic using major highways and highways connecting to major highways is expected to reach 3.27 million vehicles on the peak days in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebrations next Tuesday and Wednesday.
"Based on traffic projections, highways under the PLUS Group recorded the highest estimate with 2.2 million vehicles, followed by the KL-Karak Highway with 210,000 vehicles.
"In addition, the East Coast Highway Phase 1 (LPT1) is projected to receive 90,000 vehicles, the East Coast Highway Phase 2 (LPT2) with 40,000 vehicles and the West Coast Expressway (WCE) with 160,000 vehicles," the statement said.
For the extension highways, the Duta-Ulu Kelang Expressway (DUKE) is projected to receive 275,000 vehicles, Kuala Lumpur Kuala Selangor Expressway (LATAR) with 145,000 vehicles, and Kajang Seremban Expressway (LEKAS) with 150,000 vehicles, making a total of 3.27 million vehicles.
According to LLM, all highway concessionaires have been ordered to make thorough preparations to ensure safe and smooth travel for highway users throughout the festive period.
"Among the measures taken are ensuring there are no lane closures except for emergency work starting from February 12 to 23, and the activation of smart lanes at 32 locations identified on the PLUS Highway.
"In addition, the toll collection system is ensured to function properly, including the implementation of layered toll collection at several toll plazas identified as recording high traffic," the statement added.
Meanwhile, LLM also ordered highway operations to be at their best during the festive period, especially at rest and care (R&R) areas and side stops, in addition to the provision of portable toilets and temporary cabins with sufficient water supply.
The statement also informed about the addition of parking facilities and the increase in the number of officers, including RELA members, to control traffic flow at rest and service areas and roadside stops.
"At the same time, users are advised to plan their journeys by referring to the LLM TuJu Highway Navigation App application as well as travel time advisory information for the North-South Expressway, KL Karak Expressway and East Coast Expressway Phase 1," said LLM.
Users are also reminded to ensure that their vehicles are in good condition, have sufficient Touch n Go card balance, e-wallet and debit card, in addition to obeying traffic signs when using the emergency lane as an alternative route at the location where the smart lane is activated.
For motorcyclists, LLM advises always focusing, being aware of the activation of the smart lane and stopping for shelter at the 571 motorcycle shelter locations provided along the highway during bad weather.
