THE state of Selangor will now rely completely on imported pork to meet domestic demand after the state government decided to end all pig farming operations within its borders.
The decision follows a royal directive from Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, who has expressed disapproval of pig farming activities in any district of Selangor.
“Previously, around 70 per cent of the needs of the non-Muslim community in Selangor were supplied through imports from other states. Following the latest directive, the entire supply will be imported from outside,” said Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari in a statement on Thursday.
“Existing farms will be phased out progressively, with accelerated closure through cooperation with the Selangor State Veterinary Department,” he said, stressing that any controversy over the issue should be avoided to maintain harmony among the state’s multiethnic and multireligious population.
The move aligns with the Sultan’s earlier statement on Tuesday that he does not consent to pig farming in any district, citing concerns over environmental pollution and public unease.
The Sultan also reiterated that the construction of religious buildings must not proceed without proper authorisation. - February 12, 2026
