Controversial Rawang temple idols relocated amid police oversight

THE relocation of four idols from a temple constructed without official approval in Rawang Perdana, Gombak, was completed in the early hours of today, following a process closely monitored by the authorities.

Selangor Police Chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar stated that the removal operations at Sri Uchimalai Muniswarman Temple began at 9.30 p.m. last night and concluded at 4.12 a.m. this morning.

“Ten devotees and representatives from the temple management carried out the transfer of all four idols,” Shazeli said in a statement.

“The landowner also commenced cleaning the temple site this morning after the temple management completed the relocation process.”

He emphasised that the entire operation, supervised by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), proceeded peacefully without any untoward incidents.

“The police remind all parties to continue respecting existing legal channels and refrain from taking matters into their own hands in ways that could disturb racial and religious harmony. Any dispute must be resolved according to procedures established by the local authorities and legitimate landowners,” he added.

Shazeli further warned that the police would closely monitor social media for the spread of inflammatory content related to religion, race, or royalty, and would issue stern warnings against any postings that could provoke public unease.

The relocation comes in the wake of a recent report that four local men, aged between 26 and 39, had been arrested on suspicion of demolishing the temple without permission or notification to the local authorities, with a bulldozer seized during the operation.

However, the Shah Alam High Court subsequently overturned a two-day remand order issued by the Selayang Magistrate against the suspects, who were immediately released.

The temple, located on land belonging to a foundation, had been constructed without legal approval, and the recent demolition and relocation were carried out under the direction of the landowner.

Authorities reiterated the importance of handling such matters lawfully and cautioned against actions or content that could inflame racial or religious tensions. - February 25, 2026
