PAS set to nominate new Opposition leader as PN consults MPs

PERIKATAN Nasional (PN) is expected to appoint a new Opposition Leader from among Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) Members of Parliament, with the decision to be finalised before the next parliamentary sitting.

PN secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said the appointment process would take into account the views of all PN MPs, in line with established practice among opposition parties.

“The Opposition Leader will be selected from among PAS Members of Parliament. For the selection of the Opposition Leader, the usual practice is for it to be decided by the opposition parties involved.

“When a decision is made, the views of Members of Parliament are taken into account, just as the appointment of Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin as Opposition Leader previously was made by PN and agreed upon by Members of Parliament,” he said when met at the PAS Kelantan Aidilfitri open house.

The move follows earlier reports that PAS is set to assume the role of leading the opposition bloc in the Dewan Rakyat, with the name of its candidate to be announced at a later stage.

The position is currently held by former Bersatu deputy president Hamzah Zainuddin, who is also the Member of Parliament for Larut.

Takiyuddin noted that the appointment must be endorsed by component parties within PN through an extraordinary meeting of the coalition’s supreme council.

The transition signals a shift in leadership within the opposition bloc, as PN seeks to consolidate its position ahead of the upcoming parliamentary session. - March 28, 2026
