A POWERFUL explosion shocked morning commuters before a car was engulfed in flames in a five-vehicle collision along Jalan Bertam Malim towards Cheng earlier today.

The incident, which occurred at approximately 9.30am near Bazar Mara, left two men in their 50s and 60s injured. Both were rescued by members of the public at the scene.

Eyewitness Shahrizal Ahmad, 48, told Buletin TV3 that he observed the accident from his workplace about 40 metres away.

He described hearing a loud bang before seeing multiple vehicles involved in the crash, with one of them catching fire.

“Several individuals from other vehicles involved in the accident were seen injured, but they managed to escape and some were rescued by members of the public,” he said.

Fire and rescue officials said emergency units from the Cheng Fire and Rescue Station were dispatched immediately after receiving a distress call.

Operations commander Sihan Tahir said the blaze is believed to have started following a collision involving a Toyota Vios, a Mercedes, a Tadano crane, a Perodua Bezza and a Proton Saga FLX.

“Upon arrival, the fire involved a Proton Saga FLX with approximately 90 per cent destruction,” he said, adding that firefighters successfully brought the blaze under control after carrying out extinguishing operations.

Authorities are continuing investigations into the cause of the accident. - April 7, 2026
