A SYNDICATE has been detected offering fraudulent “fund recovery” services to victims of scams by falsely posing as representatives of the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC), the police have revealed.

Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (JSJK) director Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said victims were initially drawn in through advertisements on Facebook before being contacted via WhatsApp by suspects claiming to represent the NSRC.

“The suspect then claimed they could assist in recovering money that had been cheated from the victim, but imposed an upfront payment as a condition for the service,” he said in a statement on Monday.

“Victims who believed the offer proceeded to make several payments into different bank accounts as instructed,” he added.

Rusdi said victims were subsequently asked to make further payments, with no refund ever materialising as promised, eventually leading them to realise they had been deceived once again.

“Based on JSJK records, a total of six cases involving offers of fund recovery services for scam victims have been recorded between 2025 and March 2026, with total losses amounting to RM68,491,” he said.

He added that the cases were reported across several contingents, including Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Johor and Terengganu, with most victims having been targeted a second time after their initial scam.

Rusdi stressed that no party is authorised to guarantee the recovery of funds lost to scams, particularly in exchange for advance payments.

“The public is advised not to be deceived by such offers and to always verify with the authorities before making any financial transactions,” he said.

He further urged victims of fraud to immediately contact the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) at 997 or lodge a police report at the nearest station to enable swift action. - April 13, 2026
