MALAYSIA’S communications regulator has launched an investigation into an individual suspected of uploading false content on TikTok targeting the country’s anti-corruption agency and its leadership.
In a statement issued from Cyberjaya on Tuesday, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said it had opened a formal investigation into allegations involving content directed at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and its Chief Commissioner.
The individual has had their statement recorded to assist with the inquiry, while one communication device believed to have been used to upload the material has been seized.
The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a maximum penalty of a RM500,000 fine, imprisonment of up to two years, or both upon conviction.
The regulator said it views seriously any misuse of social media and digital platforms intended to mislead the public through the dissemination of false information, warning that firm enforcement action would be taken against those found to have breached existing laws.
Authorities also reminded the public to act responsibly when using digital and social media platforms, urging users not to abuse communication channels to publish or spread content that could undermine social harmony and public order. - April 21, 2026
