POLICE are tracking down a group of individuals believed to have carried out a dangerous public stunt involving burning flares on top of a Toyota Hilux in the middle of Jalan Sultan Ismail near a fast-food restaurant in Bukit Bintang early this morning.
Dang Wangi district police chief Assistant Commissioner Sazalee Adam said the incident, believed to have occurred at around 2am, came to the attention of authorities after videos circulated widely on social media showing several individuals performing hazardous acts using a Toyota Hilux and two scrambler-style motorcycles believed to be electric-powered.
According to Sazalee, the actions of the group posed a direct threat to public order and endangered the safety of tourists, business operators and members of the public in one of Kuala Lumpur’s busiest entertainment and tourism districts.
“Approximately seven to eight individuals are believed to have been involved in the incident, together with a Toyota Hilux and two scrambler motorcycles believed to be electric motorcycles seen in the video.
“Police are currently tracing the owners of all the vehicles involved to assist investigations. Such actions are highly irresponsible because they endanger public safety,” he said during a press conference at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters today.
Investigators are also reviewing closed-circuit television recordings from the surrounding area, although the investigation has become more challenging because none of the vehicles involved displayed registration numbers.
“We urge all individuals involved in the video to come forward and surrender themselves to assist investigations, while members of the public with information related to the incident are also encouraged to contact police.
“We will not compromise on any activity that can disrupt public safety, especially in major tourist areas such as Bukit Bintang,” Sazalee said.
Police are additionally investigating a banner displaying the number “6.6” that appeared in the viral footage, with authorities still attempting to determine its significance and possible connection to the stunt.
“We are still gathering information regarding the meaning of the banner.
“At the same time, we are also tracing a clothing store in Dengkil which we suspect may be linked to the video, and the relevant parties will be called in to assist investigations,” he added.
The case is being investigated under Section 290 of the Penal Code, Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955, Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, as well as Section 42 of the Road Transport Act 1987.
