TWO high-profile investigation papers involving former Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Tan Sri Azam Baki have been submitted to the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC), marking a significant development in separate probes concerning an alleged defamatory publication and claims of abuse of power.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk M Kumar confirmed that both investigation papers were referred to the AGC on 4 June after police completed their inquiries, including recording a statement from Azam earlier this week.

“(The investigation papers) were referred on 4 June 2026 for further instructions and advice,” BH reported him saying when contacted on Saturday.

The first investigation centres on a report published by Bloomberg which allegedly contained defamatory statements regarding Azam’s purported ownership of shares in Velocity Capital Partner Berhad, a financial services company listed on Bursa Malaysia.

The controversy arose after Bloomberg reported that Azam, 62, held 17.7 million shares in Velocity, citing annual filings submitted by the company to the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) on 3 February last year.

Following the publication, police opened an investigation after receiving a report alleging that the article contained defamatory claims against the former anti-graft chief.

Azam has also initiated legal proceedings against Bloomberg, maintaining that the report was misleading, defamatory and damaging to both his personal reputation and the integrity of the MACC.

The second investigation concerns allegations of abuse of power and criminal intimidation involving businessman Albert Tei.

Police recorded Azam’s statement in relation to the matter after a report was lodged by Tei on 13 May.

According to the complaint, Tei alleged that he had been threatened through a lawyer acting on behalf of another party.

Azam has categorically denied the allegations and previously confirmed that he had cooperated fully with investigators by providing a statement at Bukit Aman headquarters.

Police had earlier indicated that both investigation papers would be submitted to the AGC once inquiries were completed. With the files now formally referred, prosecutors will determine whether further investigative action is required or whether any legal proceedings should follow.

The cases have attracted considerable public attention due to Azam’s former role as the nation’s top anti-corruption official and the broader implications surrounding allegations involving public accountability, corporate disclosures and the administration of justice. - June 6, 2026
