A SOPHISTICATED burglary syndicate spearheaded by an ethnic Rohingya national from Myanmar has been dismantled by Malaysian authorities following a series of tactical raids across the capital city.

The crackdown, executed by Cheras district police, resulted in the apprehension of six individuals, including two Rohingya men, an Indonesian woman, and three Malaysian nationals consisting of two men and one woman, all aged between their 20s and 30s.

The operation was triggered by a high-value residential break-in in Taman Bukit Cheras on 25 April, which left the victims with substantial financial losses.

"The arrests were made following a report of a housebreaking case in Taman Bukit Cheras involving the loss of jewellery, gadgets, and cash in various foreign currencies estimated to be worth over RM13,000," Cheras District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Rosdi Daud said in a statement today.

During the coordinated strikes on 6 June, law enforcement officers recovered a substantial cache of suspected stolen luxury items alongside specialised housebreaking tools.

"In the raids, police also seized various luxury items believed to be the proceeds of robberies, as well as equipment used by the suspects for housebreaking," Mohd Rosdi said.

"Among the items successfully confiscated were six luxury watches, seven branded handbags, seven smartphones, a laptop, and a machete."

Subsequent background checks revealed that one of the Malaysian suspects possesses a extensive criminal history, with eight prior records for criminal and drug-related offences.

Investigators also established that the foreign mastermind had been running a concentrated campaign of burglaries across the local area.

"The main suspect, who is a foreign national, was found to be actively operating and committing crimes in the district," Assistant Commissioner Mohd Rosdi Daud said.

"Initial investigations revealed that the main Myanmar Rohingya suspect was involved in six other housebreaking cases around the Cheras district."

The suspects were remanded in custody until 9 June to facilitate deeper investigations into the syndicate's wider network.

"The case is currently being investigated under Section 457 of the Penal Code for housebreaking, which carries a penalty of imprisonment and a fine upon conviction," Mohd Rosdi added. - June 20, 2026
