A WOMAN was burned to death while her mother suffered serious injuries after their home was engulfed in a fire at Kampung Tubih Batu Raung, Tebedu, in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department operations chief Mohamad Fauzi Mohamet Kifli said emergency services received a distress call at about 12.29am and immediately dispatched two fire engines with 18 personnel from the Serian and Siburan fire stations to the scene.

“Upon arrival 23 minutes later, the team carried out extinguishing work involving a single-storey permanent structure that had already been 100 per cent engulfed in flames.

“The fire was successfully extinguished using two hose lines before it was confirmed that two victims were involved,” he said.

The deceased was identified as 37-year-old Nurul Farhana Amerudin, whose remains were found in a bathroom area of the house.

Her 65-year-old mother sustained second-degree burns to her face, neck, back, arms and soles of her feet.

“The victim was rushed to Serian Hospital by members of the public for treatment,” he said.

He added that the process of removing the victim was carried out jointly with police and medical personnel from Serian Hospital.

“The victim was later handed over to the police for further action. The cause of the fire and total losses are still under investigation,” he said. - July 4, 2026
