THE Social Security Organisation (PERKESO or SOCSO) will provide an online opt-out option for the LINDUNG 24 Jam Non-Work Accident Scheme beginning Monday, allowing Malaysian workers to voluntarily withdraw from the coverage.
PERKESO Group Chief Executive Officer Datuk Seri Dr Mohammed Azman Aziz Mohammed said the move follows the Cabinet’s decision to make the scheme optional for local employees, while contributions for foreign workers will remain compulsory.
He said workers who choose not to participate must complete a Liability Release Declaration before being excluded from LINDUNG 24 Jam coverage.
The declaration is required to ensure there are no legal implications under the Employees’ Social Security Act 1969 (Act 4).
"Anyone who wishes to opt out of this scheme must complete the Liability Release Declaration.
"If they choose not to contribute, PERKESO or the employer will not be responsible should any accident, injury or death occur outside working hours," he said at a press conference at Menara PERKESO on Friday.
Mohammed Azman said workers who withdraw from the scheme may rejoin at any time, although protection will only take effect once contributions resume.
He also encouraged Malaysian workers to continue participating, describing the contribution rate of 0.75 per cent as a form of long-term protection for workers and their families.
"The contribution is only 0.75 per cent. Consider this an investment for the future of your children, spouse and family.
"Do not view it as a burden because accidents can happen unexpectedly," he said.
The LINDUNG 24 Jam scheme provides various benefits, including income replacement, medical treatment coverage, invalidity benefits and benefits for dependants in the event of a contributor’s death.
As of July 9, a total of 207,000 employers had registered under the scheme, covering 2.27 million workers.
The registered contributors comprise 1.92 million Malaysian workers and 307,000 foreign workers, with total accumulated contributions amounting to RM58 million.
Since the scheme was introduced on June 1, PERKESO has recorded 1,056 claims, averaging about 27 cases daily.
Mohammed Azman said PERKESO would continue monitoring the scheme’s sustainability following the decision to make participation voluntary for Malaysian workers.
"We need to observe the trend and claims over the coming months. After that, we will conduct a study and submit recommendations to the government by the end of this year," he said. - July 10, 2026
