A moderate 5.4-magnitude earthquake strikes the Sulawesi Sea on Saturday morning - July 18, 2026

A MODERATE earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale struck the Sulawesi Sea at 10.23am on Saturday, according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia).

METMalaysia said the earthquake was centred at coordinates 4.5 degrees north and 124.9 degrees east, at a depth of 10 kilometres.

The epicentre was located approximately 199 kilometres west of Talaud Island, Indonesia.

In a statement, the department confirmed that the earthquake poses no tsunami threat to Malaysia.
