A COMPANY director in Kuala Lumpur has suffered losses amounting to RM10 million after allegedly being cheated through a fake road maintenance project in an East Coast state.

Brickfields district police chief Assistant Commissioner Hoo Chang Hook said police received a report regarding the incident on Monday.

"Initial investigations revealed that the complainant was introduced to an individual in 2024 who offered a joint venture opportunity to secure a road maintenance project in an East Coast state.

"The complainant then made two transactions totalling RM10 million into the suspect's personal account after being promised a partnership in the project," he said in a statement today.

However, Hoo said the complainant discovered in 2025 that the project did not exist after conducting further checks.

"The complainant attempted to obtain an explanation from the suspect, who provided various excuses. Suspecting that he had been deceived, the complainant lodged a police report," he said.

Hoo said investigations remain at an early stage and no arrests have been made so far.

He added that the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

"Commercial crime investigations typically require complete documentation and statements to be recorded from relevant witnesses before an arrest can be made.

"This process is important to ensure the prosecution has sufficient evidence to prove the case against the accused in court," he said. - July 22, 2026
