FORMER Umno supreme council member Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi has accused Barisan Nasional (BN) and Umno of preparing to “backstab” the Unity Government ahead of the Melaka state election.

He aimed at Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan’s statement that the party would remain in the Federal Government until the end of the current term.

Mohd Puad said the position did not sit well with what Umno had done during recent state elections, particularly its cooperation with Perikatan Nasional (PN).

“If they want stability, why did they cooperate with PN in the Johor and Negeri Sembilan elections?

“Not a few, but many attacks have been made against the Federal Government.

“For example, BN was not sincere in defending the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report on Lembaga Tabung Haji. The cordiality in Cabinet is just a Hollywood act,” he said in a Facebook post today.

Ahmad was reported yesterday as saying Umno had decided to remain in the Unity Government until the end of the term to ensure the administration continued to function properly and benefit the people.

He said this was also in line with Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s position that the party would continue supporting the Unity Government until the end of the parliamentary term.

Mohd Puad, however, claimed BN would continue to “stab” the government in the back during the Melaka election ahead of the 16th General Election (GE16).

“One reason they do not want to pull the plug is that without power, it would be difficult to carry out effective backstabbing.

“Besides, Ahmad Maslan knows some Umno leaders are vulnerable to court action. The Federal Government is their immunity and shelter,” he said. – August 18, 2026
