THE Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has detained five individuals, including a chairman of a government agency, on suspicion of abusing power in the disposal of eight lots of land owned by a government agency in Penang.

The suspects consist of a chairman with the title Datuk, two company directors, a technical manager and a female clerk, aged between 40 and 50.

Sources said the chairman is believed to have abused his position as Deputy Chairman and Board Member in 2015 to approve the sale of eight lots of land in Seberang Perai Selatan to a company believed to be linked to his associates.

The land is also suspected of being sold at a price lower than the market value, causing a loss of approximately RM1.96 million.

All suspects were detained in stages between 11 am and 12 pm yesterday at the Penang MACC office.

They are expected to be brought to the Georgetown Magistrate's Court this morning for a remand application.

MACC Chief Commissioner Datuk Seri Abd Halim Aman confirmed the arrest and said the case was being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009. – August 21, 2026
