PARTI Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) is “technically” no longer a member of Perikatan Nasional (PN), although it remains part of the coalition in legal terms, PN secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said.
He said the position followed Bersatu’s decision to stop using the PN logo and contest elections under its own party symbol.
“Bersatu is still a member legally, but technically they are not a member of PN. Technically, I say,” he told reporters after delivering a current affairs talk for the Kota Bharu parliamentary constituency at Jalan Seri Cemerlang in Kota Bharu last night.
“Because they no longer want to use PN and they are using their own logo.”
Takiyuddin said PN had yet to decide whether disciplinary action would be taken against Bersatu, although the matter remained under consideration.
“That is something we are thinking about. We have not decided yet. The consideration is always there. We are looking at the most effective approach,” he said.
He said the PN constitution provides for disciplinary measures against component parties, including suspension, expulsion or removal from the coalition.
“Within PN, there are provisions, just like other parties. There are disciplinary actions.
“If it is an individual party such as UMNO or PAS, disciplinary action is taken against members. For a coalition, disciplinary action is taken against its members, the component parties,” he said.
Takiyuddin said Bersatu’s continued decision to distance itself from the coalition could create difficulties for PN, particularly as the party appeared increasingly unwilling to remain under its umbrella.
“That is why Tok Guru (Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang) said politically, it appears that they (Bersatu) want to leave PN. If not, why would they want to use their own logo?” he said.
He said PN had previously allowed Bersatu to contest under the coalition’s logo during the Johor state election, despite PN having already ended its cooperation with the party.
“In Johor, we allowed them to use the logo even though we had already ended our cooperation with Bersatu. They contested 16 seats, and we allowed them to use the PN logo.
“In Negeri Sembilan, too, if they did not use their own logo, perhaps we would have allowed them to use PN,” he said. - August 23, 2026
