SELANGOR’S state decision to declare September 1 a special holiday has sparked debate among residents, with teachers questioning the benefit of the announcement as the date falls within the state’s existing school holiday.
Under the Education Ministry’s 2026 Academic Calendar, Selangor is among the states in Group B and is observing its second-term school break from August 29 to September 6. Schools are scheduled to reopen on September 7.
The overlap has prompted some teachers to express disappointment, saying the special holiday effectively provides them with no additional day off because they are already on holiday.
One teacher on Threads, identified as @portklangezaiza, said she had been waiting for the Selangor Menteri Besar’s announcement but was disappointed when September 1 was chosen.
“I waited for the Menteri Besar’s speech just to find out when the holiday would be. I was disappointed when it was announced for September 1 because schools are already on holiday. Why not think about everyone? Even if it was not Wednesday, Friday would have been fine. It would have extended the holiday and benefited teachers too,” she wrote.
Another teacher described the announcement as disappointing for educators in Selangor, pointing out that September 1 already falls within the scheduled school break.
“A holiday that disappoints teachers in Selangor. On top of that, Wednesday is not a good day in the timetable. Why not Wednesday or Friday?” said @haeloconio.
The reaction has nevertheless opened a broader discussion over who stands to benefit from state-declared holidays.
Some social media users argued that the holiday remains meaningful for working parents whose children are already at home during the school break.
One user said she welcomed the additional day off despite not being a teacher or student, as it would allow her to spend more time with her children.
“I’m not a teacher or a student, but I’m grateful for this additional holiday. At least I can spend more time with my children during their school break,” she said.
Others similarly suggested that choosing September 1 could give working parents an opportunity to enjoy a longer break with their children, even though teachers and pupils would not gain an additional school holiday.
The special holiday was announced by Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari after Selangor emerged as the overall champion of the 2026 Sukan Malaysia (Sukma).
The state’s contingent finished at the top of the overall standings, prompting the state government to declare September 1 a special holiday to mark the achievement.
The controversy over the date highlights how state-declared holidays can have different effects across sectors, particularly for teachers whose working and holiday schedules are determined by the Education Ministry’s academic calendar.
