A FATHER and his nine-year-old son were killed after a fire tore through their home in Kampung Tok Jembal here early Wednesday.

Kuala Terengganu district police chief Assistant Commissioner Azli Mohd Noor said police were alerted to the incident by the Kuala Terengganu District Police Headquarters operations room at about 4am.

Following the alert, personnel from the Gong Badak Police Station crime prevention patrol unit were immediately dispatched to the scene, arriving at about 4.10am.

“An inspection at the scene found that the fire had destroyed about 70% of the structure of the house, which was owned by a 67-year-old woman.

“Further checks inside the residence found that two occupants, namely a 40-year-old adult male and a nine-year-old boy, had died,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.

The fire involved a two-storey semi-permanent house near Sekolah Kebangsaan Tok Jembal.

A total of 16 firefighters and officers from the Kuala Nerus and Kuala Terengganu Fire and Rescue stations were involved in the operation, using three fire engines.

The blaze was brought under control before being fully extinguished at about 6.10am.

Azli said the cause of the fire and the estimated losses were still being investigated by the Fire and Rescue Department.

The deaths followed an earlier report that two people, believed to be an adult man and a child, were trapped inside the burning house while an adult woman managed to escape. - August 26, 2026
