MORE than 50 Malaysians in Nepal remain uncontactable by their families following catastrophic floods that have killed more than 160 people and left hundreds of others, including foreign nationals, missing.
Malaysian Embassy chargé d’affaires in Kathmandu Mohd Firdaus Azman said the embassy was still working to establish the whereabouts of Malaysians who could not be reached following Wednesday’s disaster.
“We are still gathering information on Malaysians who cannot be contacted.
“Family members have been unable to contact more than 50 Malaysians,” he told Bernama late Wednesday.
Firdaus said road access to the affected areas had been disrupted by flooding along the Bhote Koshi River, while the Nepalese government had deployed helicopters for search and rescue operations.
“We are in contact with the authorities,” he said, adding that efforts to trace missing Malaysians were being hampered by damage to communications infrastructure.
The embassy is coordinating with Nepalese authorities to gather information and identify Malaysians who may have been caught up in the disaster.
Malaysians seeking to locate relatives or friends in Nepal have been advised to email the individuals’ passport and travel details to the Malaysian Embassy at [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) to facilitate coordination with the relevant authorities.
The death toll had surpassed 160 by Wednesday night, while hundreds of people, including tourists and members of Nepal’s police and security forces, remained unaccounted for.
At least 142 Indians were among the foreign nationals reported missing.
The floods, triggered by a massive collapse of snow and ice, swept away villages, bridges and several energy projects, cutting off communities and severely hampering rescue operations.
The disaster has heightened concern among families in Malaysia as the embassy and Nepalese authorities race to establish the whereabouts of those still missing. - August 27, 2026
