THREE former Malaysian prime ministers are set to make a rare simultaneous appearance at the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex today, with Datuk Seri Najib Razak, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob each facing separate legal proceedings.

The unprecedented courtroom convergence brings together three former occupants of the prime minister’s office whose political careers have become intertwined with major legal cases involving alleged financial misconduct, corruption and the declaration of assets.

Najib, Malaysia’s sixth prime minister, is due before the High Court for the continuation of a multibillion-ringgit civil suit filed by 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) against him and several other defendants.

The proceedings before Judicial Commissioner Mohamad Redzuan Idrus are expected to continue with evidence relating to transactions and decisions at the centre of the 1MDB controversy.

1MDB is seeking billions of ringgit in damages from Najib, the former Pekan MP, and other defendants over losses allegedly suffered by the sovereign wealth fund.

Meanwhile, Malaysia’s eighth prime minister Muhyiddin is scheduled to continue his trial over seven charges linked to the Jana Wibawa programme.

The Bersatu president faces four charges of using his position to obtain RM232.5 million in bribes for the party and three money-laundering charges involving RM200 million.

His trial has involved testimony concerning projects, payments and companies allegedly linked to the programme.

The case involving the Pagoh MP is being heard before Special Corruption Court Judge Noor Ruwena Md Nurdin.

Then comes Ismail Sabri, Malaysia’s ninth prime minister, whose expected appearance marks the latest legal development involving a former head of government.

The Bera MP is expected to face a charge under Section 36(2) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 over an alleged failure to declare assets as required by the anti-graft agency.

His prosecution had previously been scheduled for August 7 but was postponed after he was admitted to the National Heart Institute (IJN) for medical treatment.

Ismail Sabri subsequently underwent a procedure to have a pacemaker fitted.

His case has attracted heightened attention following the MACC’s disclosure that investigators seized about RM170 million in cash in various foreign currencies and 16kg of gold bullion estimated to be worth RM7 million.

The seizures were made during investigations involving several of his former senior officers.

While the three former prime ministers are appearing in separate cases and are not accused of involvement in one another’s proceedings, their simultaneous presence in court represents an unusual moment in Malaysia’s political and legal landscape.

The cases span different periods of government and involve three successive former prime ministers, placing the country’s recent political leadership under an intense judicial spotlight on the same day. - August 27, 2026
