PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim remembered Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali simply as “Kak Hasmah” — a woman he described as gentle in her words but strong in spirit.
Anwar said he and his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, were deeply saddened by the news of her passing this morning.
“We knew her as Kak Hasmah, someone whose words were gentle, yet whose spirit was resilient and strong, always caring for those around her with a mother’s love,” he said in a statement.
For Anwar, that was the side of Dr Siti Hasmah that would remain in his memory as Malaysians mourned her death.
He described her as a motherly figure who had remained close to the hearts of the people, saying the country had lost someone whose kindness and contributions would be remembered.
Dr Siti Hasmah, wife of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, died today at the age of 100.
A doctor and one of the country’s earliest Malay women in the medical profession, she spent much of her life serving the public, including through her work in health and various social and welfare causes.
Anwar said he and Wan Azizah would remember her with deep affection and for the good she had done throughout her life.
He also conveyed his condolences to Dr Mahathir and the entire family, praying that Allah SWT would forgive Dr Siti Hasmah, accept her deeds and grant strength to those mourning her loss.
