Communication Minister calls on content creators and influencers to exercise basic decency and humanity - October 3, 2026

CONTENT creators, influencers, and social media users must prioritize manners, discretion, and basic humanity when producing material, particularly regarding the current situation of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said that while many members of the public are eager for updates on the former leader's well-being, not every matter should be exploited for news stories or online content.

"We understand that many people want to know the latest developments, including Tun Dr Mahathir's health condition. But in reality, not everything needs to be chased, especially to make news or content," Fahmi said in a video uploaded to X on Friday evening.

"Technology may evolve and we may hold differing views, but we must not use social media to the point where we lose our manners, morals, and humanity," he added.

Accordingly, Fahmi urged all parties to grant space and time to Dr Mahathir and his family, who are currently grieving following the passing of the late Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali.

He noted that the former prime minister's son, Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, had previously requested privacy and respect for the family during their period of bereavement.

Furthermore, the minister cautioned social media users against disseminating speculative posts, insensitive artificial intelligence (AI)-generated content, or inappropriate commentary.

"And if we come across humiliating content, insensitive AI-generated material, or posts making inappropriate wishes, do not share them, do not comment on them, and do not give them views," Fahmi advised.

"If you see this kind of content, report it immediately to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) or the police," he said. - October 3, 2026
