A 42-YEAR-OLD mentally disabled man suspected of murdering his elder brother in Kampung Banggol Tasek, Bukit Payong, Marang, has been remanded for seven days beginning today to assist police investigations.

The remand order was issued by Kuala Terengganu Court Senior Assistant Registrar Yuhanis Mohd Roslan during proceedings conducted at Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital (HSNZ), where the suspect is currently held.

Police secured the detention order under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code to facilitate ongoing enquiries under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

In the incident at approximately 9am yesterday, the 43-year-old victim, Mohd Nasir Ismail, died after being repeatedly struck with a blunt object.

The victim’s 36-year-old younger sister, Rurazmiza, sustained injuries and is receiving treatment at HSNZ after attempting to intervene and shield her brother from the assault.

Police apprehended the suspect along a roadside in Bandar Bukit Payong shortly after the incident took place.

Preliminary enquiries suggest the suspect acted out of anger over the victim’s repeated demands for money from the family, though police emphasized that the precise motive remains under active investigation alongside the seizure of relevant physical evidence.

Authorities have advised members of the public to refrain from making speculations that could prejudice ongoing investigations or disrespect the privacy of the grieving family. - October 4, 2026
