CCTV cameras at the Yong Peng school where Form Four student Irene Sofiya Mohd Khairool Faisal was killed were not positioned in the area where the incident is believed to have occurred.

Education Minister Datuk Seri Fadhlina Sidek said that, in light of this, the Ministry is taking immediate action to improve.

“The school does have CCTVs, but the cameras were not installed at the specific location where the incident took place. Therefore, we are making improvements and taking immediate action,” she said during a press conference at Parliament today.

Meanwhile, she urged schools with non-functional or damaged CCTV systems to notify the Ministry of Education.

“Please inform us so that we can work together to improve and address CCTV functionality, ensuring the systems effectively capture and record events within the school,” she said.

She also denied claims circulating on social media that Irene Sofiya was dragged from the surau to the scene of the incident.

Fadhlina also refuted allegations regarding a broken mirror in the surau that had been linked to the incident.

“So, none of this is true. I urge everyone to exercise caution before sharing information.

“We are talking about a child who has passed away, a grieving family, and several underage students who are currently undergoing the investigation process.

“Therefore, let us not add to the pain with speculations,” she said. – October 5, 2026
