DEWAN Rakyat Speaker, Tan Sri Johari Abdul, took a moment to offer "congratulations on the upcoming wedding" to Muar Member of Parliament, Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, immediately after the presentation of the 2027 Budget today.

Johari offered the warm, spontaneous remark after Prime Minister and Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had finished presenting the budget in the House.

"Congratulations on the upcoming wedding, Muar," Johari said jokingly.

The gesture caught the attention of other MPs in the House, who reacted immediately to the comment.

However, Syed Saddiq appeared to hurry out of the House as soon as the presentation session concluded.

Syed Saddiq is to wed Malaysian singer-actress Bella Astillah tomorrow.

The couple, who got engaged on March 28, are set to tie the knot at Menara Merdeka Maybank in Kuala Lumpur. – October 9, 2026
