THE RM2,500 living allowance for Form Six students under Budget 2027 is expected to help families cope with the cost of keeping their children in education after the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that about 90,000 students nationwide would benefit from the assistance, with the allowance set at the same rate as that received by matriculation students.

The cost of continuing education extends beyond books and other learning materials.

Transport, meals and daily expenses can add up, particularly for students who travel to school or come from households already struggling with the rising cost of living.

For these families, the allowance could help cover some of those expenses and reduce the pressure on household budgets.

The need for greater financial support for Form Six students had been raised before the Budget 2027 announcement.

Anwar had previously acknowledged that their welfare deserved attention, given that assistance was available to schoolchildren and students at other levels of education.

The announcement followed a dialogue with pre-university students, who raised concerns about their welfare and the support available to them.

Form Six provides an alternative route to higher education, but students still face day-to-day costs while completing their pre-university studies.

For some families, meeting those expenses can be a challenge, especially when more than one child is studying.

The allowance is intended to ease some of that burden as students prepare to continue their studies at universities and other institutions of higher learning.

Clear payment arrangements needed

The effectiveness of the assistance will depend on how it is implemented. Students and parents need clear information on eligibility, payment arrangements and when the allowance will be disbursed.

Without clear communication, families may struggle to determine whether they qualify or when they can expect to receive the money.

The Form Six allowance is among several education-related measures announced under Budget 2027.

The government is increasing the Early Schooling Assistance (BAP) from RM150 to RM200 per pupil, with 5.3 million pupils expected to benefit from an allocation of RM1 billion.

A further RM870 million has been allocated to the Supplementary Food Programme, which benefits more than 800,000 pupils.

While these initiatives cover different stages of education, the allowance extends financial assistance to students preparing to move from secondary school to higher education.

For parents, help with transport, food and other daily expenses could make it easier to support their children’s studies.

For students, the assistance offers some financial breathing room as they work towards their next academic milestone.

The priority now is to ensure the allowance reaches eligible students in a timely manner, with clear arrangements that allow families to plan their expenses. – October 14, 2026
