BNM, SC warn of deepfake videos using senior officials to promote investment scams
The regulators urge Malaysians to verify investment offers through official channels - October 14, 2026

BANK Negara Malaysia (BNM) and the Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) have warned the public against digitally manipulated videos impersonating senior officials of the two institutions to promote private investment schemes and financial products.

In a joint warning, BNM urged people who encounter suspicious content to report it to the relevant social media platforms or notify the central bank and SC directly to help curb its spread.

The public can also visit BNM’s official website at bnm.gov.my/verify to view examples of digitally manipulated content and impersonation involving the central bank.

BNM advised Malaysians to consult its Financial Consumer Alert List and the SC’s Investor Alert List to check whether entities or schemes have been flagged by the authorities.

The public should also verify whether an entity is authorised to offer financial or investment products through BNMLINK or the SC’s Investment Checker portal before committing any money.

“Members of the public are advised to verify the legitimacy of entities before investing to avoid falling victim to scams,” BNM said.

The central bank also encouraged the public to follow the Amaran Scam Facebook page for updates on evolving scam tactics and guidance on avoiding fraud.

The warning highlighted the importance of checking the authenticity of online content and seeking confirmation through official channels before making investment decisions, particularly when offers are associated with influential individuals or senior financial institution officials. - October 14, 2026
