PENANG Regional Development Authority (PERDA) chairman Datuk Dr Shaik Hussein Mydin has claimed trial to 15 charges of allegedly receiving RM847,107.61 in bribes linked to a hostel construction project worth RM23.27 million.

Shaik Hussein, 53, pleaded not guilty to all charges when they were read before Sessions Court judge Irwan Suainbon in George Town today.

He is accused of receiving the alleged bribes through Aliran Ilham Sdn Bhd from ATSH Management Sdn Bhd director Datuk R. Albert Suresh as an inducement to appoint ATSH as a subcontractor for a project to complete an abandoned 10-storey hostel block and its facilities at the PERDA Institute of Advanced Technology (PERDA-TECH) in Bukit Panchor, Seberang Perai Selatan.

The project, which uses the Industrialised Building System (IBS), is valued at RM23,268,215.35.

The alleged bribes ranged from RM45.51 to RM244,620, with the offences said to have taken place between June 26, 2025, and July 9 this year at Bank Islam in Bandar Perda, Seberang Perai Tengah.

Shaik Hussein was charged under Section 16(a)(A) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009, punishable under Section 24(1) of the same Act.

If convicted, he faces up to 20 years’ imprisonment and a fine of at least five times the value of the bribe, if it can be quantified, or RM10,000, whichever is higher.

The court granted him bail of RM300,000, subject to conditions that he surrender his passport, report to the MACC office every two months and refrain from interfering with prosecution witnesses.

Deputy public prosecutors Nurnajihatul Idayu Mohd Azuyar and Lim Jin Hong handled the case.

Shaik Hussein was represented by a team of lawyers led by Datuk Amer Hamzah Arshad, Datuk Hasnal Rezua Merican and Dr Shamsher Singh Thind, alongside Simon Ton Heng Jin, Mohd Shahrullah Khan, Muzzammil Merican and Intan Nur Alia. - October 15, 2026
