ONLINE threats, harassment and the spread of AI-generated false content that could endanger people’s safety and damage their reputations will be scrutinised under existing laws, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) warned today.

The commission said cyberbullying must not be normalised, stressing that freedom of expression on social media carries a responsibility to protect others’ dignity, privacy and safety.

In a statement on Monday, MCMC said it upheld the decree of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, who emphasised that freedom must be accompanied by responsibility, particularly in the use of social media.

It said criticism and differences of opinion should be expressed with civility and accountability, rather than used to justify harassment, threats, insults, personal attacks or the disclosure of private information that could put individuals at risk.

“These actions must not be normalised in a society that respects freedom of expression and the values of mutual respect,” it said.

MCMC also highlighted the King’s concerns over the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) to produce fabricated content and the spread of false information that could fuel defamation and hatred.

The commission said it would continue working with platform providers, relevant agencies and the public to strengthen online safety.

Content suspected of violating the law would be examined, with appropriate action taken under the applicable legal provisions, it added.

MCMC urged Malaysians to verify information before sharing it, respect differing views and uphold the dignity of others in all online interactions. - October 19, 2026
