KUALA LUMPUR – DAP has sacked Leong Cheok Keng with “immediate effect” for defecting from the party, following reports that the Malim Nawar assemblyman had applied to be a member of rival MCA.
“The DAP constitution does not allow any party member to be a member of another political party. Any person found to apply or hold the membership of another political party will have their DAP membership terminated, as such dual-membership is deemed a treachery to the party,” DAP disciplinary committee chief Chong Chieng Jen said in a statement today.
Chong said the board had on January 6 written to Leong to seek clarification on his intentions to join MCA.
“Instead of replying to the disciplinary committee's letter, Leong has chosen to go through the media to state that he will not reply to the disciplinary committee's query," Chong said.
“Such defiance and arrogance to the internal party disciplinary mechanism is not acceptable.”
Chong added that Leong's actions renders credence to report of him applying to become an MCA member, a fundamental breach of the party rules which compromises the integrity of a party leader.
“Leong has left the disciplinary committee with no other alternative but to terminate his party membership with immediate effect,” Chong said. – The Vibes, January 18, 2021
