KOTA KINABALU – Sabah DAP is calling for an independent probe into a defective flyover in Luyang here, saying “heads must roll” over the serious engineering defect.

Sabah DAP secretary Chan Foong Hin said the road defect is a matter of public interest and the truth must be laid bare to curb future engineering mistakes.

“Rectification alone is certainly not enough. An in-depth investigation is necessary and vital to determine the cause of the New Jersey Barriers (side barriers) of the flyover to be cracked and dislocated,” he said in a statement today.

Chan added the Public Works Department has yet to issue a satisfactory response to the issue.

The department’s reaction, some 48 hours after a fellow Sabah DAP leader highlighted the case, shows “an utter lack of urgency in addressing this serious road safety issue”, Chan said.

The Luyang flyover is part of the first phase of road widening and upgrading works along a 21.6km stretch of road along the Jalan Lintas-Tuaran by-pass-airport road.

Built at a cost of RM250 million, it was opened to the public in 2017.

Chan said the matter shows that the department's tender and construction award process must be scrutinised, alleging “the devil is in the details”. – The Vibes, January 19, 2021
