KUALA LUMPUR – A number of senior executives from the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) have resigned, said people familiar with the matter.

Eight out of 18 have left the organisation over the last few months, said a source, but the exact reasons could not be ascertained at the time of writing.

Insiders, however, said MDEC is split into two camps, under chairman Datuk Rais Hussin and chief executive Surina Shukri.

Rais has denied this, saying “Absolutely not true” in a text message to The Vibes.

Rais was appointed MDEC chairman on June 13 last year. He is also chief executive of think-tank Emir Research and a former Bersatu supreme council member.

The ones out are:

– Chief operating officer Datuk Ng Wan Peng;

– Chief financial officer Nor Faizah Othman;

– Chief information officer Abdul Malick Aboobakar;

– Investment development vice-president Wee Choong Hew;

– Creative multimedia director Hasnul Samsudin;

– Growth ecosystem development vice-president Norhizam Kadir;

– Human capital director Suzana Nawardin; and,

– Sharing economy ecosystem director Darzy Norhalim.

Meanwhile, in a statement today, MDEC announced the appointment of Nora Junita Mohd Hussaini as chief financial officer with immediate effect.

Nora Junita is a fellow chartered accountant with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, and a member of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants.

“She also has board of directors’ experience with private limited companies, and is a member of the Institute of Corporate Directors Malaysia and Lead Women,” said the statement. – The Vibes, January 20, 2021
