GEORGE TOWN – A power cable that caught fire on the Penang Bridge just before evening rush today caused massive traffic congestion on both sides of the link, stretching several kilometres.

Black smoke was seen billowing at the location at Km3.2.

Congestion was also reported all the way up to Juru and on the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Highway.

Prai Fire and Rescue Department operations officer Mohd Fadzil Othman said they found the power cable under the bridge burning upon arrival at the scene.

“There is no access to the site to put out the fire. The team had to look for other alternatives.

“At present, we are still extinguishing the fire and an investigation into its cause is underway,” he said.

No one was injured in the incident. – The Vibes, February 22, 2021
