PUTRAJAYA – The Covid-19 vaccination process will take 15 to 30 minutes, including time to monitor recipients for any side effects, said Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba.

The health minister said recipients will go through five stations at immunisation centres, the first being to screen their body temperature and symptoms.

The second is for registration; third, consultation and immunisation agreement; fourth, the administering of the vaccine; and, fifth, observation.

“From the screening of people’s temperature to getting the shot will take about 10 to 15 minutes. The observation period is 15 minutes. We need to provide adequate time for monitoring,” he said in a statement issued after a simulation of the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme here today.

Present was Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, who is also in charge of coordinating the inoculation drive.

The immunisation programme will be implemented in three phases starting tomorrow.

Khairy previously said Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah will be among the first recipients of the vaccine tomorrow.

Dr Adham said the Health Ministry is prepared for Phase 1, involving 572,588 frontliners registered up to Sunday.

He said 532 immunisation centres have been identified nationwide.

Pregnant women and nursing mothers will not be vaccinated, based on a resolution by the Covid-19 Vaccine Supply Access Guarantee Special Committee (JKJAV), he said.

“So far, JKJAV maintains that these groups should not be given the vaccination.”

Universiti Putra Malaysia microbiology lecturer Assoc Prof Niazlin Mohd Taib has called for expectant mothers and those still nursing to skip the jab so as to avoid potential side effects, as there has been no clinical evidence to support the use of the coronavirus vaccine by these two groups. – Bernama, February 23, 2021
