18 held in Penang crackdown on illegal gambling

KEPALA BATAS – Police have arrested eighteen individuals in several raids at 16 premises over illegal and online gambling.

The two-day operation in Butterworth, Mak Mandin, Telok Air Tawar, Tasek Gelugor and Kepala Batas was conducted by 51 police personnel led by eight senior officers from the Seberang Perai Utara district police headquarters.

“We have arrested 18 people, including 10 men and eight women aged between 19 and 60, over investigations into illegal four-digit gambling and online gambling.

“We also seized several items believed to have been used for illegal business operations, including 14 handphones with betting numbers, 11 mobile printers, screens and illegal lottery slips,” said Seberang Perai Utara district police chief Noorzainy Mohd Noor.

The operations codenamed Op Aidilfitri/Op Covid-19/Op Dadu is aimed at curbing illegal activities in the district.

The case is being investigated under Section 21A(1) of the Open House Gaming Act 1953 for illegal gambling.

Noorzainy said police patrols will be stepped up and operations to ensure no one violates the movement control order and its standard operating procedures is continuing. – The Vibes, May 27, 2021
