KOTA KINABALU – Since the federal government has yet to prohibit Sabah residents from dining in, many here are out and about enjoying their meals at restaurants.
While some premises remain cautious by only allowing take-aways and deliveries, many are taking the chief minister’s directive seriously.
On June 28, Datuk Seri Hajiji Mohd Noor had given the green light for dine-ins to resume.
Kota Kinabalu Mayor Noorliza Alip told The Vibes said the city council is still waiting for the new SOPs to be approved by the federal government.
“Otherwise, the chief minister’s statement is applicable. So, we will not be fining anyone for dining in, provided they adhere to the 1m physical-distancing and two people per table rules.”
On June 29, an eatery in Damai was fined by City Hall officers for flouting a non-Covid-19 related health SOP.
However, it triggered a misunderstanding after viral messages alleging the authorities would fine businesses allowing dine-ins.
This forced many shops to close in the city, Penampang, Tuaran and, eventually, the entire state.
Senior Minister (Security) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob that same day chided Sabah for going against federal SOPs.
Last night, Sandakan Municipal Council president Wong Foo Tin announced that dine-ins are allowed until stated otherwise.
Meanwhile, Warisan assemblyman Datuk Junz Wong said in a statement today that the party will provide legal aid for those who are fined by the authorities for dining in.
“Warisan has prepared a team of experienced lawyers to fend off dine-in compounds, with regard to the recent SOP ruckus.
“One, do not be afraid. Two, open your eateries and three, allow dining in. Finally, follow the (current) SOP until the new SOP is announced.” – The Vibes, July 3, 2021
