GEORGE TOWN – The #benderaputih campaign has caught the attention of the Tg Tokong Fishermen’s Heritage Village Association, which is doing its bit to aid those in need.
Deputy chairman Mohd Hydzir Noor told The Vibes that the group’s initiative, which began two days ago, has seen 50kg of fish given out per day. The target is to distribute up to a tonne daily.
“All the fish collected is distributed to nearby villages, with each family getting 1kg of fish.
“We give the fish to village committee members for distribution, as they are the ones who know which residents are in need.
“There are also elected representatives who want us to provide fish as aid to the needy, and we are very pleased to help.
“Usually, the recipients are given dry food, such as rice, noodles, flour and sugar, as well as tinned sardines. Rarely do we hear of them getting fresh fish.
“Now, they can have fish dishes, just like us.”
Some fishermen are also giving their catch for free, he said.
He said the fishing community in the area was made aware of some residents’ plight after seeing white flags being flown on the coast.
“The fishermen know that we’re collecting fish after seeing our white flag two days ago.
“We’re happy that some generous fishermen are giving their catch for free.
“We’re returning the favour by buying some fish, too. This way, we’re helping two parties – fishermen and people in need.” – The Vibes, July 5, 2021
