KUALA LUMPUR – Suara Haiwan Malaysia (SHM) has issued a call for public donations to aid underprivileged individuals with pets.
The animal rights group said it has received requests for such assistance via social media.
“The funds will be used to buy pet food, which will be given to these struggling families who have pets,” it said in a statement to The Vibes.
The money will also go towards rehoming rescued strays, it said, adding that the population of cats and dogs on the streets has been growing due to cases of people abandoning their pets and animal cruelty.
“The growing stray cat and dog population has prompted animal NGOs to ramp up efforts to find a forever home for these animals.
“The issue of animal cruelty and pet abandonment has been increasing over the past few years.
“SHM is running a donation drive, and would like our dear Malaysians to share this initiative, and together, help these animals find a forever home.”
Pointing out the rising cases of animal cruelty in the country, the organisation said it aims to put a stop to such injustices.
“With everyone joining forces, we can stop animal cruelty in Malaysia.”
SHM was founded this year by a group of friends with the common goal of representing the “voices” of animals.
It previously called for the establishment of an animal control officer unit to investigate cases of cruelty, and targets the setting up of a shelter for abandoned pets. – The Vibes, July 22, 2021
