MIRI – Rising floodwaters in Matu district in central Sarawak have disrupted the Covid-19 booster vaccination exercise after the community hall was inundated.

Sarawak Public Communications Unit said the booster exercise had to be cancelled after the floods disrupted operations in the hall.

“Water entered the hall following heavy rain since yesterday. The roads and compound are also flooded.

“The vaccination exercise was stopped after 104 villagers had been given their booster jabs. The jabs in Matu will resume at a later date.”

Matu district, in the Mukah division, is one of the districts affected by heavy rain.

Districts of Sibu and Nangka are also seeing floods.

Kg Seduan in Nangka has been inundated since three days ago. About 45 people were evacuated to a flood relief shelter two days ago.

The Meteorological Department had yesterday issued a warning that Sarawak is expected to experience torrential rains and strong winds until January 20.

The wind and waves in the South China Sea off Sarawak may reach 60km per hour and 4.5m high, respectively.

All offshore activities have been listed as dangerous by the department. – The Vibes, January 15, 2022
