KUALA LUMPUR – A tweet has backfired on the daughter of Senior Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali after she praised Democrat Kamala Harris as the first woman of “black (Asian)” descent to become a US vice-president-elect.
Twitter users reminded her of how Malaysia had a woman deputy prime minister not too long ago, until the “Sheraton Move” in February caused Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail to lose the position.
Amira Azmin this morning tweeted: “a black (Asian) woman as VP is proof that we can all do the impossible. So here’s to smashing our own glass ceilings.”
Within minutes, Muzakkir Syah (@muzakkirsyah) replied that Amira’s father “smashed the ceiling so hard” that the country’s first woman deputy prime minister lost her job.

Dawn D (@DDinihari) said: “She became VP by being voted into office by the people. That’s how democracy works I hear.”
Raison D’etre (@hafeez3103) shared a GIF image, asking whether he could “mute” Amira.

Mujahid Cyber (@bumilangit) posted a GIF of Dr Wan Azizah laughing, and in another tweet, asked if the former deputy prime minister “wasn’t enough”.
“We once had a woman deputy prime minister. Who pulled her down? Her own people. I rest my case,” said another reply to Amira’s tweet.
Satesh Nair (@sateshme) said: “We (Malaysia) had a lady too sadly Sheraton happened.”
